  • Master classes to tackle storytelling, casting and doc budgeting

After an epic boom at the beginning of this decade, the unscripted entertainment industry, like the television business in general, is experiencing change, filled with new opportunities, as well as challenges. There is no better place to examine the state of unscripted's new realities and to meet future partners with bold new ideas, willing to take a chance to capture and challenge an audience, than at the Realscreen Summit.

In addition to the general conference agenda, we also assemble a slate of high-value Master Classes as an optional add-on to your conference package. The classroom-style, practical presentations are scheduled for Monday, January 23, 2017. We're pleased to reveal this year's Master Class agenda below.

    Storytelling Decoded

Everybody talks about "Storytelling" but very few people really understand the mechanics. They drive the car, but they can't fix the engine. In this master class, accomplished veteran producer/director/writer Michael Hoff and a panel of selected industry executives break down the key components to successful, ratings-driven factual television. From setting the stakes, to heightening the conflict, to creating an irresistible pay-off, our experts will reveal their secrets and the tricks behind the magic.

    Talking About Talent

Join Insomnia TV's Andrea Allen as she directs a master class about that all-important component of unscripted production - talent. This wide-ranging discussion will touch on such topics as the best ways to find talent, what makes for good talent, getting the most out of a Skype pitch, signing a deal memo, bringing on a legal team, and much more. Learn how to get the most out of who's in front of, or behind, the camera for your next project.

    Budget Building

Is your production budget at the expert level that channels expect before they greenlight projects? Networks want to know that you can deliver what you promise on time and on budget. Your budget proposal can either build or erode their confidence. This interactive workshop from DocumentaryTelevision.com's Peter Hamilton and "budget whisperer" Elizabeth Ventura will give you a wealth of practical takeaways, ranging from basic steps to creating a budget and determining the real cost of your project, to protecting yourself from the unknown and using your budget to uncover the things that need fixing in your production plan... and much more!

  • What I Did, What I Learned

The unscripted and non-fiction content industry is undergoing a rate of change that comes with both new challenges and new opportunities. But one thing remains consistent - there is no better way to take the pulse of the industry and gain invaluable perspective from those at the forefront of the business than attending the Realscreen Summit.

A jam-packed roster of sessions featuring top executives and creatives from throughout the industry makes the Summit the most important market and conference for non-fiction and unscripted content creators and buyers from around the world. The 2017 edition will, through its panel sessions soon to be listed on the event agenda, dive deep into the hot-button topics dominating the discussion today, with an eye towards helping to shape the industry of the immediate future. From the opportunities available through the influx of new buyers and content platforms, to an examination of how the industry's business model has evolved and where it needs to go, the 2017 Summit offers an invaluable window into the non-fiction and unscripted content business.

We have several panels confirmed thus far, including What I Did, What I Learned.

If you started a non-fiction production company 20, or even 10 years ago, you were the beneficiary of an international boom in factual and unscripted content, profitable networks in a growing cable industry, and confident programming execs looking to take risks and make noise. But as Lou Reed once sang, "y'know, those were different times." In today's more competitive, and some might say combative climate, business is done differently and even the veterans never stop learning. In this session, you'll hear from those who built their businesses in the "boom" days and find out what they learned to prevent going bust, as well as from those who are now marrying interdisciplinary smarts with good old entrepreneurialism to set up shops today.

The Realscreen Summit takes place from January 23-26 in Washington DC. You can register now for the entire conference, with access to provided meals and social events, for just $1,550. Add Master Classes and the rate is $1,875. The full conference and Master Class rate is $2,075, so the savings are significant!
