Sara Helman joined TLC in October 2015 as the Vice President of Production and Development. Helman helps oversee development strategy and programming initiatives for the network and is currently working on several shows in development including the 90 Day Fiancé spinoff series, 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days(working title). She is based in the New York office and reports to Howard Lee, EVP Development and Production, TLC and General Manager of Discovery Life.
Formerly, Helman oversaw production for Destination America working on series including Hillbilly Blood and Buying the Bayou. She implemented new and innovative series and stunts, including the development and launch of the network’s first live show Exorcism: Live! and produced the new hit series Alaska Haunting. Helman previously worked for Food Network and Cooking Channel as Director of Programming where she helped manage production for 16 series and specials including, All-Star Family Cook-Off, Sweet Genius, Sandwich King and Extra Virgin among many others.
Helman first started at Discovery Communications in 2003 as part of the development team for Discovery Kids and then went on to Animal Planet as manager and director of development until 2011. While at Animal Planet, she developed one of the highest-rated pet series, Too Cute and worked on brand-defining series such as Tanked, My Cat From Hell and Hillbilly Handfishin’.
Helman graduated from the University of Michigan where she double majored in English Literature and Film Studies. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and daughter.
