As Vice President, Unscripted Development, BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions, Alejandro Melendez holds a key creative role, actively working to develop, package, and produce top international formats for US audiences, as well as original series.
Melendez was instrumental in leading development for the critically acclaimed, true crime documentary series Murder Among the Mormons which became a break-out hit on Netflix. He worked with the directors and executive producer to creatively re-shape and hone the concept as a docuseries. Melendez also played a pivotal role in successfully pitching the series to Netflix.
Before joining BBC Studios, he served as a consulting producer at Universal Television Studios, where he developed primetime series, including the crafting competition series Making It (NBC) hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. Prior to that, Melendez led development across multiple genre and sub-genre projects at Film45 as Director of Development, including sub-culture follow-docs, investigative follow-docs, formatted shows, and more, working on titles including The Selection (History) and A Field Between (CNN).
Previously, as Manager of Development at Asylum Entertainment / Legendary Pictures, Melendez developed ideas and formats for broadcast and cable series, such as Nate & Jeremiah by Design (TLC) and No Stone Unturned (Discovery).
Melendez began his career at NBCUniversal as a page and later worked as a development and casting coordinator on NBC primetime reality competition shows, including The Voice, America’s Got Talent and The Biggest Loser.
A Salt Lake City native, Melendez graduated from University of Utah with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Film & Media and Public Relations. He resides in Los Angeles.
