Jonathan Murray

Founder & Executive Consultant

Bunim/Murray Productions

Widely credited with helping to usher in the modern reality television genre with his late partner Mary-Ellis Bunim, Jonathan Murray continues to inspire, influence and entertain television audiences worldwide. Since the launch of The Real World (MTV) in 1992, Murray has created and executive produced some of the industry’s most innovative, unscripted, entertainment television programs including the Emmy award winning Born This Way (A&E) which documents the lives of young adults with Down Syndrome and their families.

Under Murray’s leadership, Bunim/Murray Productions created the first reality game show, Road Rules (MTV), in 1995; the first reality sitcom, The Simple Life (E!), in 2003; and the first reality soap opera, Starting Over, in 2003.

Bunim/Murray Productions continues to thrive, producing projects for primetime, cable and digital television platforms including Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Life of Kylie, Total Divas, Total Bellas and Citizen Rose (E!), The Challenge, The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars and Lohan Beach Club (MTV), Valerie’s Home Cooking (Food Network), Born This Way (A&E), Earth Live (National Geographic), Bill Nye Saves the World (Netflix), The Selection: Special Operations Experiment (History), The Healer (TLC), GloBugz (YouTube), The Real World and Ball in the Family (Facebook Watch), Endless Summer and Growing Up is a Drag (Snapchat), and Miz and Mrs. (USA Network).

In 2005, Murray earned his first Emmy Award for Starting Over (Syndication) and in 2009, his second for Autism: The Musical (HBO). In 2012, Murray was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. Murray graduated from the University of Missouri, School of Journalism and currently lives in Los Angeles.
